NPB Security’s custom in-house security training courses

It’s critical that NPB Security guards are equipped to handle the array of situations that can take place in the real world. To do this, NPB Security has launched two in-house training courses which are designed to educate and upskill all guards.

The retail training course is specific to NPB Security’s clients. The course covers situations of theft, crowd control with alcohol consumption, alcohol sales with no alcohol consumption, de-escalating situations and consumer behaviour scenarios.

NPB Security’s in-house training courses have been curated by Personnel Manager Peter Boyd, who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to effectively mentor the guards.

“The retail training courses not only allow guards to learn from management’s experiences but to also learn from each other by sharing their personal experiences,” said Peter.

NPB Security also offers a new crowd control course which involves the legalities surrounding the behaviour of patrons and staff, overcrowding, venue management and more.

“In this course, we also teach guards techniques on how to remove responsibility when in a situation they can’t overrule.”

“Guards come out of the session with a better understanding of their role, additional techniques on how to handle certain situations and most importantly, a boost in confidence.”

Both courses are held on a fortnightly basis with content updated regularly.

Peter is a long-time coach and the owner of The West Australian Thai Boxing Centre, where he continues to develop the skills required to teach his clients and colleagues.

Peter’s diverse security career has provided him with a great deal of experience to pass on to promising guards in the industry.

“For three years I worked at a local shopping centre where I dealt with a lot of confronting situations. I also carry out venue checks for more than 60 retail venues across WA and have discussions with managers about how we can further satisfy their needs,” Peter said.

“This experience has provided me with the skills necessary to assess guards’ abilities and identify how we can help to upskill and teach them in-house.”

Peter enjoys the feedback received from the training courses and how the guards have used their newly acquired skills in the real world.

“I’m learning new things on the job every day. I enjoy when guards pull me aside to tell me about the situations they’ve witnessed and how they’ve responded. They make me a greater mentor and teacher.”
